Kihon (basics)
In kihon training, one learns the fundamental techniques of karate such as punch, strike, block, and kick. Kihon is the foundation of karate training in which kata and kumite are built upon. Only after a rigorous kihon training and the mastering of the basic techniques can one perform an excellent kata and execute effective kumite techniques.
Kata (form)
The kata is a pre-arranged sequence of techniques that follow a certain order or pattern of movement. In kata training, one combines the offensive and defensive techniques learned in kihon training. This is combined with correct body movement and changes in direction as to where the perceived opponent is positioned. The karate-ka (karate practitioner), while visualizing the invisible opponents, learns the art of self-defense with mental calmness and confidence while facing danger.
Kumite (sparring)
In kumite training, one is faced with a sparring partner (opponent) and applies the basic techniques that were learned in kihon and kata training. With a sparring partner, the karate-ka learns to adapt himself or herself in a given situation whether it’s pre-arranged or not.
